Villa Westhinder is a listed property from 1931, designed by renowned Belgian architect Henry Van de Velde. On the seafront of Knokke-Le-Zoute stands the modernist villa, which is moreover a protected heritage site. The exceptional location and iconic design make the architect’s house a real gem on the Belgian coast.
Nowadays, the house serves as a family home. The interior has been overhauled over the years by several generations, which has resulted in the loss of some of the original elements. For the renovation of the entrance hall and the kitchen, we restored the interior to its former glory in terms of design and materiality, while installing contemporary living comfort.
We’ve connected the kitchen with the living space and practically revamped it with rounded cabinetry, including a chrome strip and unique visible hinges, all custom made by Cubex. The cabinets, sinks and tiles refer to the facade with rounded corners, the plinths and the hall because the architect designed it as an ocean liner shaped house. In the hall, Jules Wabbes lighting and Sapeli woodwork added to the original burmese teak by De Coene, add to the 1930s atmosphere.
With hours of research into the quintessence of the Henry van de Velde style as a starting point, we have created a fine example of craftsmanship where the client can enjoy the tranquillity of the North Sea.
